Subhas Chandra Bose Biography

Subhas Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack, Orissa in 1897. His father Rai Bahadur Janakinath Bose was a famous lawyer. He was a ninth child among fourteen children of his parents. He took admission in Presidency College, Calcutta. . He left for England on 1919 to appear at the Indian Civil Service Examination.subhas chandra bose He passed the examination by coming out 'Fourth' among the successful candidates. He returned to India and joined the Indian National Congress to fight for the independence of India as he disagreed to join service under British rule.


By December 1927, Bose along with Jawaharlal Nehru became the General Secretary of the Congress. In November 1934, Bose published a book of Indian nationalism called "The Indian Struggle". In 1938 he became President of the Indian National Congress and presided over the Haripur session. He, however, resigned in 1939, because of his strong differences with Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru. After that Bose formed the Forward Block, but which unfortunately was not very successful. Subhas was in favor of armed revolution in order to drive out the British from India. At this time Second World War started. Subhas Chandra Bose was interned in his Calcutta home under constant police guard by British Government. Subhas made an escape on the 41st midnight from his residence and went first to Germany by road, and then to Japan in a submarine.


In Berlin, he formed the first Indian National Army (I.N.A.) with the 'prisoners of war' who were Indian soldiers serving the British Army. Now he came to be known as 'Netaji'. Subhas also founded an Indian Radio Station called Azad Hind Radio in Berlin.


From Berlin, Subhas went to Japan, where the I. N. A. was enlarged with the addition of more soldiers and civilians. Netaji declared war against the British. The I.N.A. fought in the Burma front and reach the Indian soil and hoisted Indian national flag in Imphal at Manipur. The war suddenly took a U-turn when the allied Japanese forces surrendered in the World War. The I.N.A had to retreat in the war.


On 18 August 1945, when he started for Russia in a Japanese aircraft, it unfortunately met with an accident at the time of taking off and Netaji died in that accident.
