• India commissioned its second nuclear submarine INS Arighaat today in Visakhapatnam. The construction of INS Arighaat involved the use of advanced design and manufacturing technology, detailed research and development, utilisation of special materials, complex engineering and highly skilled workmanship.
• Gautam Adani and his family have secured the top spot in the 2024 Hurun India Rich List, with a wealth of ₹ 11.6 lakh crore, surpassing Mukesh Ambani.
• India's Avani Lekhara won her second gold medal in the women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 shooting event, defending her crown. She broke her Paralympic record from Tokyo in the final on Friday. Mona Agarwal won bronze in the event.

• Today is National Sports Day. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of greatest field hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
• Paralympic Games 2024 have been officially inaugurated with a grand opening ceremony in Paris yesterday.

• The Union Cabinet has approved the development of 12 industrial smart cities across 10 states, with an estimated total cost of Rs 28,602 crore. The project is expected to attract investments worth Rs 1.52 lakh crore and generate around 9.39 lakh direct jobs, with the potential to create up to 30 lakh indirect jobs.
• Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was elected unopposed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). BCCI secretary Jay Shah will become the youngest man to lead the International Cricket Council.

• The festival of Janmashtami is being celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence across the country today.
• Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the establishment of five new districts in Ladakh. The newly created districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

• The Union Cabinet has approved the Unified Pension Scheme for government employees, which provides for an assured pension. The scheme assures 50 percent of the average basic salary for the last 12 months before retirement as pension for government employees who complete a minimum of 25 years in service. It will be proportionate for a shorter service period upto a minimum of 10 years of service.
• Shikhar Dhawan has announced retirement from all forms of international and domestic Cricket. The left-handed batter appeared in 37 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is for Team India. He scored a total 10 thousand 867 runs in the international Cricket including 6793 runs in ODIs.

• The first National Space Day is being celebrated across the country today.The theme for this year’s celebration is Touching Lives while Touching the Moon. On this day last year, the Chandrayaan-3 Mission accomplished a safe and soft landing of the Vikram Lander on the lunar surface. With this achievement, India has joined the elite group of Spacefaring nations becoming only the fourth nation to land on the surface, and the first nation to land near the south pole of the Moon.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Kyiv today on a day-long visit to Ukraine. Mr. Modi will hold one-on-one and delegation-level talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
• Karnataka Cabinet approved the Bengaluru Skydeck project, set to be South Asia's tallest structure, at a staggering cost of ₹ 500 crores. The tower will be approximately 250 meters high.
• Neeraj Chopra finished 2nd in Lausanne Diamond League 2024 with a season-best throw of 89.49m.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a three-day visit to Poland and Ukraine today.
• RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been ranked as the top central banker globally for the second consecutive year, receiving an 'A+' grade from Global Finance magazine.
• The International Cricket Council (ICC) has moved the ninth edition of the Women's T20 World Cup to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Bangladesh.

• Raksha Bandhan is observed today.
• The Election Commission has announced assembly polls in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election will be held in three phases - on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results to be announced on October 4.
• Tokyo Paralympics gold medalist Sumit Antil and shot-put star Bhagyashri Jadhav will be flagbearers of Indian contingent at the opening ceremony of the Paris Paralympics. The Paralympic Games will take place from 28th August to 8th September this year. In Paris Paralympics, 84 athletes will represent India.

• ISRO today successfully placed an Earth observation and SR-O DEMOSAT satellites into intended orbit. The space agency launched its third and final developmental flight, Small Satellite Launch Vehicle-D3, carrying Earth Observation Satellite EOS-08.
• The winners of the 70th National Film Awards have been announced, celebrating the best in cinema from 2022. In the non-feature film category, Aaina won the best non-feature film award. In the feature film category, the best Hindi film award was bagged by Gulmohar. Rishabh Shetty won the best actor award for his Kannada film, Kantara.
• Thailand’s Parliament elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the youngest daughter of former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, as the country’s new prime minister.

• Today India celebrates 78th Independence Day.
• After Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created history by becoming the third Indian prime minister to give 11 straight speeches on Independence Day.
• Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav has said India has added three more Ramsar sites to the network, taking the tally to 85. Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Tawa Reservoir of Madhya Pradesh have been added to the list of India’s Ramsar sites.
• The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years.
• Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s joint silver medal hope came to an end with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, rejecting her appeal against disqualification from the Paris Olympics.
• Hockey India has retired jersey number 16 from the national senior men’s team in honour of goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. Sreejesh recently announced his retirement from Hockey after a successful Paris Olympics. Sreejesh’s decision to retire came after an 18-year-long career that included securing back-to-back Olympic bronze medals in 2020 and 2024.

• Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out maiden test flight of Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB), GAURAV from Sukhoi-30 MK-I of the Indian Air Force.
• One thousand 37 personnel of Police, Fire, Home Guard and Civil Defence and Correctional Services have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals on the occasion of the Independence Day. Head Constable of Telangana Police, Chaduvu Yadaiah was awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry.

• Paris Olympics 2024 comes to an end with the glittering closing ceremony at Stade de France. India, with a total of 6 medals, including one silver and five bronze medals, finished at the 71st spot in the overall medal tally. The United States came out on top in the Olympic medal count with a stunning total of 126 medals, including forty gold. China also with forty gold came in second in the total medal tally with 91. Japan came third with 45 medals including 20 gold.
• Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame was sworn in for his fourth term after securing over 99 per cent of the vote.

• India's defence exports soared by 78 percent in the first quarter of 2024-25 as compared to the same period last fiscal year.
• President Droupadi Murmu was accorded the Grand Collar of Order of Timor Leste, the highest civil award by President José Ramos Horta at the Presidential Palace in Dili.
• At the Paris Olympics, Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat clinch a bronze medal in the Men's 57kg freestyle event.

9th August-2024, Current Affairs:

• Neeraj Chopra came up with a season best throw of 89.45m to clinch silver in javelin throw event at Paris Olympics 2024. Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem (92.97m) took home the gold.
• India beat Spain 2-1 in the men's hockey bronze medal match of Paris Olympics 2024 at Stade Yves-du-Manoir. India thus secured back-to-back medals at the Olympics, having also won bronze in Tokyo three years back, for the first time in 52 years. The last time India won back-to-back hockey medals at Olympics was in 1968 and 1972.
• Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of the interim government in Bangladesh.

• Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh, who was set to compete for gold medal on Wednesday in the Women's 50kg final, was disqualified by the event organisers as she was a few grams overweight.
• Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, veteran Left leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister, died at his south Kolkata residence this morning. He was 80. Mr Bhattacharjee, also a former member of the CPM's top decision-making body, Politburo, served as Bengal Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011.
• The Government has announced the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, one of the highest recognitions in the fields of science, technology, and innovation in India. The ISRO-Chandrayaan 3 Team will be awarded the Vigyan Team Award for their contributions to space science and technology. Former Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Professor G. Padmanabhan, has been selected for the Vigyan Ratna Award in biological sciences. Anandharamakrishnan C, Umesh Varshney, Bhim Singh, Adimurthi Adi, Syed Wajh Ahmad Naqvi, Sanjay Behari, and Rahul Mukherjee are among those selected for the Vigyan Shri Award.

• Bangladesh's Nobel-winning microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus has been named the head of the military-backed interim government after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina amid massive protests.
• Vinesh Phogat reaches the women's 50kg freestyle final, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to achieve this feat.
• President Droupadi Murmu received the highest civilian award 'Companion of the Order' of Fiji on Tuesday.

• World champion Noah Lyles roared to victory in 9.79sec to claim gold in men's Olympic 100m final in Paris on Sunday. Lyles won in the closest Olympic 100m finish in modern history as just five thousandths of a second separated him from Jamaica's Kishane Thompson.
• Bangladesh was engulfed in political uncertainty on Monday with the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the wake of violent student protests over a government jobs quota scheme. Bangladesh’s Army chief confirmed that Sheikh Hasina had resigned amid reports that she along with her sister had left the country. Around 90 people including 13 police personnel, were killed and scores injured yesterday in the widespread violent clashes amongst protesters, members of law-enforcement agencies and members of ruling party-backed organisations across the country.

• Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred wins historic women's 100m gold at Paris Olympics.
• India are into the semi-finals of Paris Olympics 2024 men's hockey after beating Great Britain via shoot-out at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir.

2nd August-2024, Current Affairs:

• US space agency Nasa will send India's Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Friday in a statement. According to the statement, Group Captain Shukla would be the primary mission pilot while another Indian Air Force official, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, would be the backup mission pilot.
• Lakshya Sen scripted history in Paris as he became the first Indian man shuttler to reach the semi-final stage at the Olympics. Lakshya defeated 12th seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan in quarter-final at the Paris.

• Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale made history, becoming the first Indian shooter to bag a medal in the 50m Rifle 3P event at the Olympics. Swapnil Kusale clinches bronze for India in 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men's Final. He finishes third with an aggregate of 451.4. Secures India's 3rd medal in shooting and overall.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh in New Delhi.
• The Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill 2024 was introduced in the Lok Sabha today by Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai. The Bill seeks to amend the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
• Legendary Indian cricketer and former coach, and selector Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71 in Vadodara, after losing his long battle with cancer.
