Ramon Magsaysay Award
• The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award given by Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation.
• The award is presented in a function held in Manila in Philippines. It is named after Ramon Magsaysay, the third president of the Republic of the Philippines.
• The award is given in 6 categories: Government services (GS), Public services (PS), Community leadership (CL), Journalism, literature & creative communication arts (JLCCA), Peace and International Understanding (PIU) and Emergent leadership (EL).
• The Magsaysay award celebrates the memory and leadership example of the former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay and is given every year to individuals or organizations in Asia.
• It is Asia’s premier prize and highest honor, celebrates greatness of spirit and transformative leadership in Asia. The prize is also known as the Noble Prize of Asia.
• The winners of the award for different categories are selected annually by the trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation.
• Awardees are presented with a certificate and a medallion with an embossed image of Ramon Magsaysay facing right in profile.
• The prize was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government.
• Acharya Vinoba Bhave was the first Indian to win this prestigious award. He won this award in the year 1958.
• Mother Teresa, Arun Shourie, Maheshweta Devi, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Ravish Kumar, Sonam Wagnchuk, Anshu Gupta are some of the notable recipients of the award from India.
