Ratio and Proportion
Q11. The ratio of incomes of A and B is 5 : 3 and that of their expenditures is 9 : 5. If they save Rs. 2600 and Rs. 1800 respectively, then their incomes are
(a) Rs. 5000, Rs. 3900
(b) Rs. 6000, Rs. 4200
(c) Rs. 8000, Rs. 4800
(d) Rs. 9000, Rs. 5100
Answer: (c) Rs. 8000, Rs. 4800
Let, the incomes of A and B are 5x and 3x and expenditure are 9y and 5y respectively.
A/Q 5x - 9y = 2600 -------- (1)
And 3x - 5y = 1800 -------- (2)
(1) X 3 - (2) X 5 ⇒
15x - 27y = 7800
15x - 25y = 9000
----------------------
(-) -2y = - 1200
⇒ y = 600
(1) ⇒ 5x - 9 X 600 = 2600
⇒ 5x = 2600 + 5400 = 8000
⇒ x = 1600
∴ A's incomes = Rs. 5 X 1600 = Rs. 8000
B's incomes = Rs. 3 X 1600 = Rs. 4800
Q12. If 1/x : 1/y : 1/z = 2 : 3 : 5 then x:y:z = ?
(a) 15 : 10 : 6
(b) 15 : 15 : 8
(c) 20 : 10 : 8
(d) 20 : 15 : 6
Answer: (a) 15 : 10 : 6
Let 1/x = 2k 1/y = 3k 1/z = 5k
⇒ x = 1/2k ⇒ y = 1/3k ⇒ z = 1/5k
∴ x : y : z = 1/2k : 1/3k : 1/5k
= (1/2k) X 30k : (1/3k) X 30k : (1/5k) X 30k
= 15 : 10 : 6
Q13. If A : B : C = 2 : 3 : 4 then A/B : B/C : C/A = ?
(a) 8 : 9 : 24
(b) 9 : 11 : 19
(c) 11 : 13 : 20
(d) 13 : 15 : 22
Answer: (a) 8 : 9 : 24
Let A = 2k, B = 3k, C = 4k
Now | A | = | 2k | = | 2 |
B | 3k | 3 |
B | = | 3k | = | 3 |
C | 4k | 4 |
C | = | 4k | = 2 |
A | 2k |
∴ A/B : B/C : C/A = 2/3 : 3/4 : 2 = (2/3) X 12 : (3/4) X 12 : 2 X 12 = 8 : 9 : 24
Q14. Three equal glasses are filled with mixtures of spirit and water. The ratio of spirit and water is : 1st glass = 3:4, 2nd glass = 4:5 and 3rd glass = 5:6. The contents of three glasses are emptied into a single vessel. What is the ratio of spirit to water in the mixture now ?
(a) 820 : 1059
(b) 860 : 1132
(c) 920 : 1159
(d) 970 : 1205
Answer: (c) 920 : 1159
Let 1 liter of each be taken
Now spirit = | 3 | + | 4 | + | 5 |
3 + 4 | 4 + 5 | 5 + 6 |
= | 3 | + | 4 | + | 5 |
7 | 9 | 11 |
= | 297 + 308 + 315 | = | 920 |
693 | 693 |
Water = | 4 | + | 5 | + | 6 |
3 + 4 | 4 + 9 | 5 + 6 |
= | 4 | + | 5 | + | 6 |
7 | 13 | 11 |
= | 396 + 385 + 378 | = | 1159 |
693 | 693 |
∴ Ratio of spirit to water = | 920 | : | 1159 |
693 | 693 |
= 920 : 1159
Q15. The ratio between two numbers is 3 : 4. If each number is increased by 6, the ratio becomes 4 : 5. The difference between the number is
(a) 6
(b) 9
(c) 11
(d) 13
Answer: (a) 6
Let, the numbers be 3x, 4x
A/Q | 3x + 6 | = | 4 |
4x + 6 | 5 |
⇒ 15x + 30 = 16x + 24
⇒ x = 6
∴ Numbers are 3 X 6, 4 X 6 = 18, 24
Required difference = 24 - 18 = 6
Q16. In a class, the number of girls is 20% more than that of boys. The strength of the class is 66. If 4 more girls are admitted to the class, what will be the ratio of the number of boys to that of the girls ?
(a) 2 : 3
(b) 3 : 4
(c) 3 : 5
(d) 5 : 7
Answer: (b) 3 : 4
Let, the number of boy's be x
∴ the number of girls = x + x X 20% = x + (20x/100) = 120x/100 = 6x/5
A/Q x + (6x/5) = 66
⇒ (5x + 6x)/5 = 66
⇒ 11x = 330
⇒ x = 30
∴ No. of boys = 30
No. of girls = (6 X 30)/5 = 36
∴ Boys : girls = 30 : 36 + 4 = 30 : 40 = 3 : 4
Q17. If 20% of (P + Q) = 50% of (P - Q), then P:Q = ?
(a) 3 : 2
(b) 5 : 4
(c) 7 : 2
(d) 7 : 3
Answer: (d) 7 : 3
20% of (P + Q) = 50% of (P - Q)
⇒ | 20 | X (P + Q) = | 50 | X (P - Q) |
100 | 100 |
⇒ | P + Q | = | P - Q |
5 | 2 |
⇒ 2P + 2Q = 5P - 5Q
⇒ 3P = 7Q
⇒ P/Q = 7/3
⇒ P : Q = 7 : 3
Q18. Rs. 6400 are divided among three workers in the ratio 3/5 : 2 : 5/3. The share of the second worker is
(a) Rs. 2000
(b) Rs. 2500
(c) Rs. 3000
(d) Rs. 3500
Answer: (c) Rs. 3000
Ratio of worker's are 3/5 : 2 : 5/3
= | 3 | X 15 : 2 X 15 : | 5 | X 15 |
5 | 3 |
= 9 : 30 : 25
∴ Share of second worker = | 30 | X Rs. 6400 |
9 + 30 + 25 |
= Rs. (30/64) X 6400 = Rs. 3000
Q19. If a : b = b : c then a4 : b4 = ?
(a) a2 : b2
(b) a2 : c2
(c) b2 : c2
(d) a3 : b3
Answer: (b) a2 : c2
a : b = b : c
⇒ a/b = b/c
⇒ b2 = ac
⇒ (b2)2 = (ac)2 ⇒ b4 = a2c2
Now a4 : b4 = a4/b4 = a4/a2c2 = a2/c2 = a2 : c2
Q20. If 32 students in a class are females and the ratio of female to male students is 16 : 9, then what percentage of the class is female ?
(a) 51 %
(b) 55 %
(c) 57 %
(d) 64 %
Answer: (d) 64 %
Let, no. of female students be 16x and no. of male students be 9x
A/Q 16x = 32
⇒ x = 2
∴ No. of males = 9 X 2 = 18
Total no of students = 32 + 18 = 50
Required female % = (32/50) X 100 = 64%
