SSC CHSL Exam......

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organization under Government of India. The SSC conducts exams every year to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices .

The Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) examination is for recruitment to the Posts of Lower Divisional Clerk/ Junior Secretariat Assistant, Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistant and Data Entry Operator. The exam is a three tier exam. The examination will consist of a Computer Based Examination (Tier-I), Descriptive Paper (Tier-II) and Typing Test/ Skill Test (Tier-III).

Nationality/ Citizenship:

A candidate must be either a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan or a Tibetan Refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. Also a Tibetan Refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible to apply if some prerequisite conditions are fulfilled.

Age Limit:

A candidate’s age should not be less than 18years and not more than 27 years at the time of application. Permissible relaxations in Upper age limit for different categories as per rule.

Educational Qualification:

Candidate must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University. If the post is for Data Entry Operator then the candidate should be 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.

Application fee and mode of fee payment:

The exam fee can be paid through SBI Challan/ SBI Net Banking or by using Visa/ Mastercard/ Maestro Credit/ Debit card. Women candidates of all categories and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Persons with Disability (PwD) and Ex-servicemen (ExS) eligible for reservation are exempted from payment of fee. 

Centre of Examination:

The exam is conducted on selected centers across India. A candidate must indicate the Centre in the online Application Form in which he/ she desires to take the examination. A candidate may give option maximum three centers, in the order of priority, within the same region.

Scheme of Examination:

The examination is consist of a Computer Based Examination (Tier-I), Descriptive Paper (Tier-II) and Typing Test/ Skill Test (Tier-III).

 This examination tier is consisting of Objective Type only. The questions are set both in English & Hindi for Part-II, III & IV.

There will be negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.

Indicative Syllabus for Computer Based Examination (Tier-I):

General Intelligence: It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test will include questions on Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Symbolic/ Number Analogy, Trends, Figural Analogy, Space Orientation ,Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Symbolic/ Number Classification, Drawing inferences, Figural Classification, Punched hole/ pattern-folding & unfolding , Semantic Series, Figural Pattern – folding and completion, Number Series, Embedded figures, Figural Series, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Word Building, Social Intelligence, Coding and de-coding, Other sub-topics, if any Numerical operations.

English Language: Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/ Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings/ Detecting mis-spelt words, Idioms & Phrases, One word substitution, Improvement of Sentences, Active/ Passive Voice of Verbs, Conversion into Direct/ Indirect narration, Shuffling of Sentence parts, Shuffling of Sentences in a passage, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage.

Quantitative Aptitude:

Arithmetic:

Number Systems: Computation of Whole Number, Decimal and Fractions, Relationship between numbers.

Fundamental arithmetical operations: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time and work.

Algebra: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Elementary surds (simple problems) and Graphs of Linear Equations.

Geometry: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts:

Triangle and its various kinds of centers, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.

Mensuration: Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base.

Trigonometry: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Height and distances (simple problems only) etc.,

Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar- diagram, Pie-chart

General Awareness: Questions are designed to test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions are also designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy and scientific research.

For VH candidates of 40% and above visual disability and opting for SCRIBES there will be no component of Maps/ Graphs/ Diagrams/ Statistical Data in the General Intelligence & Reasoning/ Quantitative Aptitude.

Tier-II (Descriptive Paper):

Tier-II Paper is a descriptive Paper of 100 Marks in Pen and Paper Mode. The duration of the paper is one hour. The Paper comprises of writing an Essay of 200-250 words and Letter or Application of approximately 150-200 words. The minimum qualifying marks in Tier-II is 33 per cent.

Tier-III Examination:

Tier-III of the Examination is a Skill Test/ Typing Test which would be of qualifying nature.  The final merit of the successful candidates would be determined on the basis of total score obtained by them in Tier-I and Tier-II.

Skill Test for Data Entry Operator:

The Data Entry Speed should be 8,000 Key Depressions per hour on Computer.

The ‘Speed of 8000 key depressions per hour on Computer’ will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage. The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes.

For the post of Data Entry Operator in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG): The 'speed of 15000 key depressions per hour on Computer’ will be adjudged on the basis of the correct entry of words/ key depressions as per the given passage. The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes.

Typing Test for LDC/ JSA and Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistant:

Typing Test are conducted for those candidates who qualify in the Computer Based Examination (Tier-I) and Descriptive Paper (Tier-II). Such Typing Test is conducted in English or Hindi.

Typing Test are administered on the Computer, to be provided by the Commission or any agency authorized by the Commission.

Candidates opting for English medium should have typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m) and those opting for Hindi medium should have typing speed of 30 words per minute.

Mode of selection:

Candidates are shortlisted for Tier-II Examination on the basis of their performance in Tier-I. There may be separate cut-offs for different posts. Candidates qualify in the Tier-II are shortlisted for Tier-III Examination.

Tier-III Examination i.e. Skill Test is qualifying type. The candidates who qualify Tier- III are called for Document Verification to check the eligibility of candidates as per information given by him/ her during online Application Form.
