1947 15th August India wins independence from Britain.Jawaharlal Nehru is appointed as the first prime minister.
1947 27th October India and Pakistan go to war after Pakistan attack Jammu and Kashmir area.
1948 30th January Mahatma Gandhi,Father of Nation, is assassinated by Nathuram Godse.
1950 26th January India becomes a republic country after constitution comes into effect. Indian constitution is the longest written constitution in the World.
1951 4th March to 11th March First Asian Games hosted by India.
1951 8th December Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru presented the First Five-Year Plan to the Parliament of India. 
1952 25 October 1951 to 21 February 1952 First General election of independent India held. Congress won the election with 364 seats.
1957 26th January The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir came into force in the state.
1962 20th October to 21st November India-China war started over disputed Himalayan border.
1964 27th May India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru dies after a five-month illness.
1965 August to 23rd September The Indo-Pakistani War occured, which ends after a U.N. call for ceasefire.
1966 24th January Indira Gandhi elected as the first Women Prime Minister of India.
1969 15th August The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is founded.
1971 3rd December to 16th December India and Pakistan engaged in war. The war ends after 90,000 Pakistani troops surrender at Dhaka and with the formation of Bangladesh.
1974 18th May India conducts first underground nuclear test known as Smiling Buddha.
1975 26th June Indira Gandhi declares a state of emergency in India.
1979 17th October Mother Teresa is awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize.
1983 25th June Indian cricket team wins the ODI World Cup for the first time under leadership of Kapil Dev.
1984 31st October Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated by her bodyguards.
1984 2nd and 3rd December Bhopal gas tragedy happens due to deadly gas leaks from Union Carbide Corp. Over 6,500 people died due to the poisonous gas in Bhopal.
1985 23rd June Air India Flight 182 was destroyed with a bomb, killing 268 Canadian citizens, 27 British citizens, and 24 Indian citizens.
1991 21st May Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is assassinated by LTTE during an election campaign by suicide bombing.
1992 6th December Babri Masjid demolished which lead to communal violence in the country.
1994 21st May and 19th November Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai wins the Miss Universe and Miss World titles respectively.
1998 11th May, 1998 to 13th May, 1998 India conducts nuclear tests at Pokhran in Rajasthan.
1999 May, 1999 to July, 1999 Kargil war started as India launches offensive against Pakistan-backed infiltrators in Kargil.
2001 13th December Terrorist attack on the Parliament of India in New Delhi.
2005 12th October Right to Information Act implemented in India.
2007 25th July Pratibha Patil becomes the first woman President of India.
2008 11th August Abhinav Bindra wins the gold medal in the men’s 10 m air rifle shooting event in Olympic Games. It was India's first-ever individual Olympic Games gold medal.
2011 2nd April India won the ODI Cricket World Cup for second time under leadership of MS Dhoni.
2013 16th June Uttarakhand witnessed devastating floods and landslides killing over 6,000 people and leaving thousands homeless.
2015 26th January US President Barack Obama becoming the first US head of state to attend India’s Republic Day parade.
2016 28th-29th September First surgical strike against Pakistan across the Line of Control in Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
2016 8th November India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
2017 1st July The Goods and Services Tax (GST) implemented in India.
2017 1st February General and railway budget presented together for the first time.
2019 5th August Government of India revoked the special status granted under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution to Jammu and Kashmir.
