Wimbledon Trophy

• Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

• Since 1877, it has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London.

• Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass courts.

• Traditionally, each year the tournament begins on the last Monday in June or the first Monday in July.

• The inaugural Wimbledon Championship was won by Spencer Gore. Men’s Singles was the only event played that year.

• From 1884, the club added the Ladies' Singles competition.

• Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles events were added in 1913.wimbledon-trophy

• Till 2021, Roger Federer won the most Men's singles titles in the Wimbledon tournaments. He won 8 titles.

• Till 2021, Martina Navratilova won the most Women's singles titles in the Wimbledon tournaments. She won 9 titles.

• The first black player to compete at Wimbledon was Bertrand Milbourne Clark from Jamaica, in 1924.

• The Championship was first televised in 1937.

• The Men's Singles champion is presented with a silver-gilt cup. The trophy has been awarded since 1887.

• The Ladies' Singles champion is presented with a sterling silver salver commonly known as the "Venus Rosewater Dish".

• Dark green and purple are the traditional Wimbledon colors.

• As per tradition, all participating tennis players in the tournament need to wear all-white or at least almost all-white clothing.

• Both the men's and ladies singles consist of 128 players.

• From 2001, 32 players have been given seedings for singles, 16 teams in the doubles events.

• The first players to be seeded as no. 1 were René Lacoste and Helen Wills.

• The winners of Wimbledon do not get to keep their trophies. They remain on display at the All England Club’s museum. But winners do go home with a small replica of the trophy.

• Prize money was first awarded in 1968.

• The longest match ever played at Wimbledon took place at the 2010 tournament between John Isner of the United States and French player Nicolas Mahut. Isner defeated Mahut after 11 hours and five minutes of play and was played over the course of three days.
