The United States is a federal republic consisting of 50 states and several territories. The President serves as the nation's Head, overseeing the federal government's operations. Within each state, a Governor is appointed to represent the federal authority. Alaska stands as the largest state in the United States in terms of land area. Population-wise, California is the largest state with around 40 million residents.
